GETTING READY FOR OUR SUMMER INTENSIVE

Summer Intensive at MBA
June 4th - June 29th

This year, as in the past, we are offering a summer intensive course for five levels during the month of June. Our dates are June 4th - June 29th.
During this time we will have the following classes:

for Beginner I: ages 3 & up we offer two classes/week,

Tuesdays & Thursdays at 9am-10am

for Beginner II: ages 5 & up we offer three classes/week:

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am - 10:30am

For all other levels: Pre-Intermediate (ages 8 - 11), Intermediate (ages 11 & up) and Advanced (ages 13 & up) we will offer classes daily from 10am - 4pm.

Repertoire from famous ballet pieces
         Balanchine repertoire class
Jumps & Turns class
        Character dance
Jazz
Hip-Hop
Contemporary
        Neo-Classical choreography class

Our faculty will consist of Slawomir and Irena Wozniak, Olga Tarasova, Nadiya Kovtun, Kevin Jenkins, Martin Naugle, as well as Slawomir Jr and Michal Wozniak, and more.

Price is $1100 for full session or $275/week for full program,

Beginner I - $35/week, Beginner II - $85/week.

Sibling Discount of 10% will be available for all levels.

Master Ballet Academy Receives
OUTSTANDING STUDIO AWARD
at the Youth America Grand Prix San Diego, CA Semifinals

Our studio received the Outstanding Studio Award at the YAGP semifinals in San Diego, CA, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our teachers as well as our students who attended the competition.
It is the third year that we have participated in this prestigious ballet competition. We have first learned about it two years ago, when we brought five students to the San Diego semifinals, after training them for a short month. Even with such a short time of training, one out of our five girls won first place, and another one also made it to the top twelve. Last year, we also had five participating students, and instead of San Diego, we took them to the Los Angeles semifinals, with similar results, third place and another top twelve out of five.
This year we had a team of nine outstanding ballet students who have proved that they really are some of the best dancers in the region.
Gisele Bethea, who has been our full time student only since August, has proved that her natural talent paired with hard work and dedication can pay off very quickly. Gisele won first place in both classical and contemporary categories for the junior division. Congratulations, Gisele!
Leanne Fromm has also made it to the finals for the third year in a row, placing third in the classical junior division. She also made it to top twelve with her contemporary solo choreographed by our own Martin Naugle.
Alexa DiMuro, our full time student only for the past month has also proven that hard work can pay off quickly. She made it to the top twelve in the precompetitive classical division.
Esther Huszar, competing her second year with us, has grown as a dancer, receiving higher scores this time than last year. We are very proud of you, Esther and happy to see you continue to grow as a dancer!
Mia Rosin, Julianna Kassenbrock, Skyler White, Shea McAdoo and Brooke Read also received high scores, though they did not make it to the finals. Neverthless, their beautiful performances and high scores helped our school get the Outstanding School Award.
We are very proud of all our girls, and wish to thank them all for their hard work and dedication. A school is as good as its students, not only teachers. We are very fortunate to have a team of dedicated, passionate dancers, whose work ethic and talent matches that of their teachers. Thank you to all our wonderful dancers!

Ballet and Friends Presents The Nutcracker

For the fifth year in a row, B&F presents Slawomir Wozniak’s The Nutcracker, this time at the Orpheum Theater, in Downtown Phoenix.
The old fairy tale is presented in our show in a way that attracts children of today, brought up on cartoons. The battles between mice and toy soldiers, as well as Drosselmeyer’s mysterious transformation into the nine-foot tall Mouse King is fascinating even for the x-box generation. Ballet lovers will delight in the professional level dances of the snow flakes, flowers as well as soloist culminating in the Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier’s dance. The fast-paced and fun production is sure to delight audiences of all ages. The show will keep you hooked from the first minute of it till the end. We owe this staging of the 19th century classic to an original storyline, as well as modern choreography by Ballet and Friends’ Artistic Director, Slawomir Wozniak.
The Principal Dancer at the National Opera in Warsaw has originally choreographed this show for Theatr Wielki from Poznan, Poland, in 2006. The production was a huge success from the very beginning and it stayed in the company’s repertoire, being played often at Christmas time to this day. Phoenix audiences are fortunate to experience this unique production this year at one of our most beautiful venues, the Orpheum Theater in Downtown Phoenix. Our cast includes renowned professional dancers and entertainers from the US and abroad, as well as some of the most talented ballet students from the Valley. The professional level costumes reflect the era perfectly in the first act, and are unique for the second act. They are made by Oso Rojo Costumes based on designs by Irena Wozniak and Claudia Folts of tutu.com.
Ballet and Friends, the organization behind this production, is dedicated to help children in our community. Our dancers have presented an abridged version of the show at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, as well as at the Children’s Center of Maricopa Integrated Health System for children whose illness prevent them from leaving the hospital. This year we are also partnered with AZ Dance’s Movement E-Motion, organization that provides instruction and performance opportunities for young adults with Down Syndrome, Autism or other physical challenges. We are continuing our long-standing relationship with the Marine Corps through their Toys for Tots program, by providing both toys and monetary donations.
By purchasing their tickets, audiences will be delighted by the show as well as assisting us in giving back to the community, supporting Toys for Tots, and contributing to numerous organizations dedicated to helping children.

Our Dancers Touch Lives

After having a mini-show of the Nutcracker at the Phoenix Childrens' Hospital, some od our dancers led by our artistic director and our ballet mistress, Slawomir and Irena Wozniak, brought the same show to the Maricopa Children's Center. They really touched a few lives of the burn patients there, here is a letter that Ms LeSueur sent out after the performance:

"I just wanted to relay to you all how much I personally appreciated today’s Nutcracker performance.
The troupe was amazing, and I was able to bring three of my pediatric burn patients and families, as well as one adult burn patient down to enjoy for the venue. It made for a much brighter start to the day for our burn patients, much different than the typical therapy/bandage change regimes that start their days – for that I wholeheartedly thank you. The wealth of talent shared by the young performers was truly a sight to behold as well.
I just wanted to share one brief story with regards to today’s event that truly touched my heart, and perhaps will yours as well.
Our adult burn patient whom was able to attend was mesmerized by the ballet talents of the performers, and actually went to congratulate and talk with the troupe after the performance. She had been looking for dance classes for her young daughter, but due to costs/locations of classes she had searched out thus far, she had been unable to find anything. I am elated to say that not only did this troupe hear out her request, but they have arranged for dance classes for this adult burn patient’s daughter, at greatly reduced costs! This patient was discharged today a much happier and brighter self in healing and heart.
Thank you for bringing this venue here – not only did it affect our pediatric patients in attendance, but it was effective in touching the adult hearts and lives as well!

We were busy during the summer, though had no time to post. Our five week summer intensive was a great success, and after a short break we started back fresh. We have a few new teachers and lots of new students. It's been taking a while to adjust to the growth of the studio.
And now Nutcracker season is upon us again. We've seen lots of wonderful dancers during the auditions and we have a cast now and already have started rehearsals this past weekend. Tonight will be the third rehearsal of the season, everything is going great!
Kathleen Rojas of Oso Rojo Costumes is making us brand new waltz Corps costumes and tutus for the Walts of Flowers Queen.
Marking Ballet & Friends' 30th anniversary and the 5th under the direction of Slawomir Wozniak, this season's shows promise to be the best ones yet.
I'll try to keep everyone updated with the progress.

World Ballet Competition

We took four of our students to the World Ballet Competition held in Orlando, Florida, after they all have passed the video audition.

Tessa DesRoche, Leanne Fromm, Esther Huszar and Jade Jacoby all did an outstanding job dancing at the competition.

Leanne Fromm brought home the bronze medal along with a cash prize and three scholarship offers. Great Job, Leanne!

Esther Huszar also received a scholarship offer to the Orlando School of Ballet.
Congratulations to them all!

I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at Master Ballet Academy's Annual Spring Show. I attended with my husband, and several dear friends, and we were all deeply impressed by the quality of the production. Our community is fortunate to have such an outstanding dance academy for our young people. It is a rare privilege to have world class dancers, brilliant, experienced, and passionate, to instruct, encourage, and mentor our children. The cast of performers was well taught and well rehearsed, and danced with energy and joy. The audience was rewarded by a caliber of entertainment that far exceeded in value the price of our tickets.

Following the show, my group went out to dinner. Our conversation around the table was peppered with enthusiastic gushings about our wonderful experience at the ballet! Of course we raved about the choreography, the costumes, the music, the lighting, the sets, the venue: but above all else, we expressed our delight with the amazing dancing! The enactment of the tragic story of Carmen and Don Jose was fresh and powerful, vigorous and intense. The characterizations portrayed by the performers were subtle, finely nuanced, and surprisingly mature. Each dancer, whether soloist or member of the corps, added grace and dimension to the over-all impact and success of this incredible rendition of "Carmen."

The second portion of the show, The Best of MBA, was thrilling. It was fun to see the contemporary and jazz numbers, together with the classical ballet. The talent of the participants in these complex numbers was clearly evidenced in their brilliant technique. It will be soul satisfying to watch these up-and-coming performers as they continue to grow and develop. The "Power to Wow" will make true stars of those dancers willing to "give it their all." But more important still, will be their sense of satisfaction in being a part of something as wonderful as the "World of Dance!"

The Best of Master Ballet

We had auditions last Sunday for the second part of the spring show. All of our students who auditioned looked great, they will all get to perform!
The show is not long enough to have every dancer perform all of their solos, so it will be a very hard decision to just pick one or two from each of them. We may have to ask some of the soloists to perform different numbers for the different shows.
We have some wonderful talented dancers at Master Ballet! We are very proud of them all!

Congratulations to all, we are very proud of you!

A few of our students danced at the Paradise Valley Community College's Spring Show. Allie Burman presented her Paquita variation, Leanne Fromm danced La Esmeralda, and Katelin Ahern danced the Black Swan variation on Friday, April 29th, along with Elizabeth Mann, who danced as a PVCC student, but she is also our own teacher/student/front desk helper. For the Saturday show Esther Huszar joined Allie, Kate and Elizabeth, performing her Play, after being called in last minute. Thank you, Esther! All of the dancers did a great job, making our studio look good.

The 12th Annual Celebration of Dance was a great show this year, with professional and student dancers from around the Valley presenting their routines in front of a full house. Our studio was represented at the April 30th show by Leanne Fromm with La Esmeralda variation. Their second show, on June 4th will present Gabriella Keski and Allie Burman.

Great Job Everyone! To top it all, none of the girls even missed rehearsals while competing and performing everywhere. You girls are all wonderful!

It will surely impress the audience, just like all of his other shows. The costumes, designed by Irena Wozniak, look beautiful. Our dancers will start rehearsing for it on Friday, April 8th.

After a short break, we will continue our spring recital with a contemporary number, as well as a jazz routine that Kevin Jenkins has choreographed for his students.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to enjoy the work of our most talented dancers, who will perform some of their solos that they have been using for different competitions.

We hope that everyone will have fun during rehearsals and shows and the audience will enjoy our production.

Sorry we haven't been posting much lately; its' been very busy at the studio, haven't really had a chance to relax after The Nutcracker, we've been getting our students ready for different competitions.
Some of our students have competed in NUVO, where they both have won break-out artists.
We have competed in Spotlight, where all of our competitors won prizes in their respective cathegories. (for full story, check our facebook, or the Spotlight site).
In the end of February our team of six students competed in the Los Angeles semifinals of the Youth America Grand Prix ballet competition. This was a big one, since YAGP is the world's largest international student ballet competition. We were successful there, too, four out of our six dancers got scores of above 93 (out of the possible 100). One of them placed third in Junior Classical cathegory and made it to top 12 in Junior Contemporary, with scores of 96,6 and 95. She will be representing us in New York, where she will compete with some of the best ballet students from all over the world.
This past weekend some of our students auditioned for Celebration of Dance to be held on April 30th and June 4th. They all did a great job.
All four of our students who auditioned for World Ballet Competition made it through the first round (video auditions). We are getting them ready for that competition to be help in Orlando, Fl. during the week of May30-June 4th.
In the meantime we are getting ready for our spring recital, to be held May 27th and 28th at the Paradise Valley Community College.
We are also planning our summer intensive of 5 weeks, June 4th through July 9th.

Nutcracker is Over!

We've had six great shows at the Herberger Theater this past weekend. Everyone involved, dancers, teachers, parents worked very hard to make it the best it could get. The cast members had a great time during the long hours they have spent at the Herberger Theater, and they all enjoyed being on stage. We had wonderful sets, great costumes, and most of the time a full house. The shows looked professional while the dancers took the audience far away, to a magical place where snowflakes and fairies danced in a young girl's Christmas dream. The audience, children and adults alike, were mesmerized by the sets, the lights, the costumes, and mainly our dancers themselves. Great job, Everyone!
As we say goodbye to our Nutcracker and our guests who danced with us, we are a bit sad, but ready to relax and enjoy the upcoming Holiday Season.

Studio Announcements:

The first week of November is Class Observation Week. We invite all parents, grandparents and everyone interested to come and watch your children in class, and witness their progress. You may observe any class during the week of November 1st -Nov. 6th. Thank you all for understanding our policy about staying in the waiting rooms the rest of the time. Your children are able to focus better in class and take snack/water breaks for a few minutes between classes. Hope you will enjoy Class Observation Week.

If you are interested in competing for Master Ballet Academy, please sign up at the front desk, so Mr. and/or Mrs. Wozniak can meet with you and set a schedule for you. We are currently getting ready for Youth America Grand Prix ballet competition and The World Ballet Competition. Schedules for these competitions will be available at the front desk.

We have lockers available for rent at the studio for $30/year. If you find yourself running late every time because you cannot find your dancer's shoes/leotard, etc. or coming directly from school and feel that it is too much for them to carry their dance bag in addition to their backpack, this option may be for you. Please let us know if you are interested.

Stretch Bands used in our stretch classes are available for purchase through the studio for $65 each. These stretch bands are imported from Germany and are the best for what the dancers are using them for. If your child's teacher recommends her/him to stretch at home, it is a great option. Also, because we have a limited number of them available for classes, some of the dancers may need to share them, so they may get less out of the class than if they had their own.

T-shirts with Master Ballet Academy's logo are available for purchase, please ask at the front desk if you are interested. We are planning on offering Nutcracker 2010 commemorative t-shirts later in the month.

Please remember that tuition is due on the 1st of the month. A late fee of $25 will be added to your bill after the 10th. In order to avoid this, you have the option to have us charge your credit card on file with a 2% processing fee. If you'd like to avoid both of these fees, please remember to bring in cash or check before the 10th of the month.

Student of the Month

Our student of the month this time is Nina Kravetz. Nina was nominated by her teacher, Ms Irena Wozniak for her hard work and dedication to the art of ballet. She is in level IV ballet classes and according to Ms. Irena she is the most improved student in the studio. Nina only started dancing a year ago, and she is already on pointe. She has had perfect attendance in the past month and works hard in each and every class she takes. Congratulations, Nina, keep up the good work!

Happy Fall, Master Ballet Academy families! October is finally bringing a bit of cooler weather to Phoenix, and with it, our Nutcracker season is starting. We held our auditions in the last weekend of September, and we’ve seen lots of wonderful dancers eager to be part of our show. The preliminary cast was announced on the last day of September, and we have our first rehearsals scheduled on Friday, October 8th. Hope everyone is excited. Please plan on attending the cast meeting for important information about the production and to sign up as volunteers. Thank you to the parents who already signed up. The production would not be possible without all of you.

October is also Michael Jackson month. In his honor, Nikkia is teaching Thriller to her hip-hop students. Hope you all have fun with that! Anyone want to join them? Just sign up for his month. It is a great way to celebrate Halloween, too.

Speaking of Halloween, on Saturday, October 30th, we invite all students to dress up for class. Of course, you should still consider that you'll need to dance in your costume, and you'll need to wear your dance shoes, but other than that, you can be as creative as you'd like. Best costume in each class will win a small prize.

Unfortunately Zumba will no longer be available on Wednesday nights. You can still get a good workout with Tony on Saturdays, regular times.

Student of the Month
Our student of the month this time is Billy Lee. He is signed up for unlimited classes and is taking ballet technique, stretch and ballroom. He had perfect attendance this past month, he is always there on time, and is working hard in every class. He has a great attitude in and outside the classes. Billy is a home schooled 8th grader.

Nutcracker Auditions

The auditions went great! We had lots of wonderful dancers show their talents. Thank you to all of the judges who took time off from their busy schedules to be with us and help audition the students.
Cast will be announced on the 30th of September. As always, though, this will only be a tentative cast, the final cast will be announced after a few rehearsals, closer to the shows.

Master Ballet Academy has opened its doors to ballet students in January of 2007. Since then we have seen our dancers progress and their love for dance grow. We added modern, jazz, and contemporary dance to our curriculum to ensure that our dancers are well rounded. We've performed two shows each year, The Nutcracker with collaboration with Ballet & Friends every winter and a spring show in May at the end of the season.
Last year was especially successful for our students. After our successful Nutcracker show some of our most talented students went on to compete in regional, national and international competitions, bringing back awards for the studio. We closed the season with our spring show dedicated to Chopin, with a ballet choreographed by our own Slawomir Wozniak.
With the new season starting, we are once again getting ready for The Nutcracker. Our open auditions will be held on the 25th of September, where we hope to see many talented dancers. Our show this year will be on Thanksgiving weekend at the Herberger downtown Phoenix. We will keep everyone posted about how things will progress.
